A CNC lathe of 4 axis or more will generally involve a machine which offers a combination of live tooling, meaning milling capabilities, as well as a subspindle allowing of back end work on the part. Though this is the most prominent version of a 4 axis lathe, in this day and age there are so many more combinations that exist allowing for complete parts to be finished in one set up. These would include machines that offer multiple turrets, some with, some without Y axis capability, also multiple spindles allowing for parts to be passed between them to handle work on both the front and rear of the part. More recently in the last couple decades we have seen what are often referred to as “B Axis” pendulum type heads that allow the tool to come in at different angles on parts and allowing for very complex parts to be machined in one set up.
