Lathes Engine lathes are horizontally shaped pieces of machinery whose primary function is the manual turning of metal.  By turning the metal and using specially designed cutters, this tool is capable of coaxing the metal into specific shapes.  It is widely used in the creation of engine parts.  This type of lathe is also useful for fashioning square blocks, creating shafts, and drilling.  Because one can make his own tools using this type of lathe, it is often referred to as a reproductive tool. These Oil Field and Hollow Spindle Lathes feature a large spindle bore and a chuck at each end of the spindle.  Jewelers lathes are the smallest lathes, so small that they could fit in the palm of one hand.  Jeweler’s differ from other lathes in that the gravers are handheld and supported by a T- rest.  (In other lathes, the gravers are fixed to a cross slide).  Turret lathes have a cylindrical tailstock that can rotate around a vertical axis, allowing it to present different facets toward the work piece.
